San Diego has many wonderful hiking trails, for most hikers it means hiking either at Cowles Mountain, La Jolla Natural Preserve or Mount Woodson in Ramona. Cowles Mountain is the tallest in the city with its 1,592-foot peak. Thousands of hikers trek to the mountain every weekend for the spectacular 360-degree view. Since it is so popular it is being loved to death!
Fear of over crowding the trails Levi Dean, a ranger at Mission Trails Regional Park, came up with an idea to ease over crowding and re-directing people’s affection creating the 5-Peak Challenge!
Launched last month, the 5-Peak Challenge involves reaching the top of not just Cowles, but also Pyles Peak (1,379 feet), Kwaay Paay (1,194), South Fortuna (1,094) and North Fortuna (1,291). Combined distance to the top of all five: 11.5 miles.
To prove the hikers have been there, they take pictures of themselves next to the summit sign on each peak, to the rangers proving that they have successfully hiked each peak. Once the pictures of all five peaks are shown the hikers received a pin and certificate marking their accomplishment. Now who is up for the challenge?
