Christmas Is Over! Here’s Where You Can Recycle Your Tree!

Dec 20, 2018

San Diego’s Christmas tree recycling program starts Tuesday December 26, 2018 for the 46th year.

Once the Holiday cheer is over, the bigger question one has on Dec 26th is what to do with the Christmas tree? For many San Diego & La Jolla residents, getting rid of their Douglas or noble firs is as simple as placing it outside for curbside garbage pickup. For others, especially eco-minded residents the city of San Diego will have 16 locations where trees can be dropped off, including the Miramar Greenery at the Miramar Landfill at the north end of Convoy Street near state Route 52.

Did you know that recycling trees helps the environment and will extend the life of the landfill!

Historically, yard clippings and other organic materials, such as Christmas trees, comprise more than 20 percent of the material buried in the landfill, By recycling trees, San Diego residents help reduce the amount of material in the landfill, which gives holiday trees a second life as compost, mulch or wood chips that can be used year round.

The service is available through Jan. 23 for city of San Diego & La Jolla residents. People who live in other cities or in unincorporated county areas need to contact their own trash haulers for details.

Good News both Green and Flocked trees (fake snow) are accepted. For Greenery, curbside, and drop-off sites, all tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel, and other tree decorations must be removed. No artificial trees.
