8th Stop on my “Blog Tour of La Jolla”- La Jolla’s Secret Path – Coast Walk
Hidden away in La Jolla, nestled just between Prospect Street and Coast Blvd is an amazing walking path called Coast Walk. The path begins at a secret location, a small parking lot at the intersection of Prospect Place and Park Row. From the parking lot you take the wooden staircase with the brown hand rail that will lead you to a magnificent bluff overlooking the gorgeous La Jolla Bay, only 100 feet below. The view is just awesome! To your right, you can see the hollow for which La Jolla is named. Only a little beyond the hollow, you can see the red-tiled roofs of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, followed by the line of tall palm trees along Kellogg Park. A little farther on is the pier of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a La Jolla landmark since 1916.
Next the path will take you above the Seven Sea Caves to La Jolla Cove and behind multi-million dollar homes. Watch your step because you will be high above the ocean on top of the cliffs. The entire walk is about 1 1/2 miles but the spectacular coastline and scenic views are well worth the walk. As you continue walking along Coast Walk you will reach the La Jolla Children’s Pool. This tiny beach was originally partially enclosed by a sea wall for a children’s swimming area, but now on most days the nearby seals can be seen basking on the beach in the sun. This is one of the best spots for taking pictures of La Jolla, so don’t forget to bring your camera. If you get tired anywhere along the walk don’t worry because there are plenty of park benches to rest on while enjoying the beautiful view.
The La Jolla Coast Walk extends from Hospital Point to Coast Walk and Park Row in a largely residential area. While you are walking along the path there is plenty of time to look in the tide pools and see all the sea creatures that live in them by Hospital Point. So grab a picnic lunch, take your time, and soak up La Jolla’s beautiful coastline. Enjoy your walk just like I do every Sunday Morning, maybe one Sunday I’ll see you out there too!
