7th Stop on my “Blog Tour of La Jolla” — Windansea Beach
“Windansea Beach, a spectacular La Jolla beach.”
My husband Scott and I love to take our three dogs on early morning walks along one of our favorite La Jolla beaches, Windansea. We love to watch the surf as the dogs run around happily on the sand (before 9:00am). My nephew Ian is an excellent surfer and has been surfing Windansea all is life as it is one of his favorite beachs too! He once told me that between Windansea and La Jolla Cove there are so many different breaks (waves) to surf that there is no reason to go anywhere else. He is there often enough that he has picked up the nickname of the ‘mayor’ of Windansea
Windansea is wonderful little stretch of beach situated along gently-sloped cliffs covered with vegetation. The rocky shore of the beach is known for its beautiful scenery and surf breaks created by underwater reefs. Sandstone rocks act as partitions along the beach offering a secluded atmosphere for picnics, intimate gatherings and sunbathing. Much of the beach at Windansea experiences shorebreak, a condition on steep beaches which results in hard breaking surf at the shoreline; which is why you will see only the most experienced surfers surfing there. Above the beach you will find visitors and locals alike parked in their cars in front of some of the most expensive properties in La Jolla.
One of the most recognized landmarks in La Jolla is “The Shack” at Windansea beach. The grass-roofed shack was built by surfers and dates back to the early 1940’s. “The Shack” is now a registered San Diego Historic site. Because of the beach’s popularity to surfers, it has been a gathering spot for the Windansea Surf Club since the 1960’s. Windansea Surf Club is a community-based surf organization of several hundred members who participate in surf competitions and donate time and resources to the local community and its needs.
So if you want to watch great surfing or beautiful sunsets Windansea is the beach for you. And, if you are out early on a Sunday morning at Windansea Beach and see a couple with three dogs be sure to stop and say Hi. You can check out this website for a few more details and directions.
